Broadcast Technology has been so much fun this semester with Mr. Goble! I signed up for this class not too sure if I was going to like it and not sure if I was going to be interested in it but I'm so glad I took this class! I really enjoy watching YouTube videos and the YouTubers I watch use Final Cut Pro to edit their videos so I've always been so interested on how they do it. I've learned quite a bit about Final Cut and I now know that if I was required to use it to edit in the future I would be so much more confident to work with it. I've not only learned how to edit, but also how to capture videos and all of the different aspects that go into a good shot. I've learned about sequencing, B roll, angles, soundbites and natural sound, and color. All of these things will be so useful for recording and capturing shots in other classes as well as in the future. My favorite project we've done has definitely been the final project on B roll interviews. It was the most difficult in my eyes, but definitely the most exciting and I felt so accomplished once I was completely finished with it. Mrs. Davidson and Mr. Goble have been so great this semester and have taught me so much! I would totally take this class over again if I could!

Sadly, a few weeks ago in broadcast technology, we began our final project. This has definitely been the most tedious and difficult project so far, but without a doubt the most fun. My friends Ellie and Jamie and I started by emailing Mrs. Mannix (science teacher) asking if we could do a story about what it's like teaching students in the trailers this year because of the construction going on here at Ladue. She emailed back happy to do it and we took a few days to film the construction as well as a lot of shots of the outside and inside of the trailer. We then interviewed Mrs. Mannix herself as well of a couple students on their thoughts on the trailers. We put it all together in a Final Cut Pro video with different soundbites, B roll, and sequencing. This project was difficult because there was so much to do, but in my opinion it was super fun and I think my video turned out great!
Steve hartman everybody has a story: middle school football players execute life-changing play4/10/2017 Middle school football players from Olivet Middle School in Olivet Michigan go in on a play the whole team knows about except for the coaches. They decide to not score any touchdowns so that the other team can have a victory and make their day. They then decide to help one of their teammates, Keith, in scoring a touchdown for the first time ever. Keith has special needs and wasn't ever popular or cool at school, but when Keith scores a touchdown at the game, everything changes. Not only did it change Keith's life, but also impacted all of Keith's teammates and showed them that it's important to look out for everyone and not just yourself and your friends.
In Steve Hartman's Soul Food story video he goes to South Carolina to learn about Suzanne Lee's story. Suzanne has four children who all graduated from college because she wanted all of her children to be bright. To help pay for tuition she worked as a lunch lady in the cafeteria at a nearby school. When she retired, she continued to cook for all of her friends and family. She has three refrigerators in her home where she stores all of her food because she "doesn't know who may come". She loves to cook for others and will continue to do so for as long as she can.
Over the past couple of weeks in Broadcast Tech 1 we have been working on filming, editing, and perfecting our interview projects that are finally finished! This project involved a lot of brainstorming on how we can make a great video by interviewing an expert. For my interview, I used my friend Shirley Gelman (Laduettes Dance Team Senior Captain) to ask her some questions about what it is like to go to a typical dance practice and be on the National Champions of 2016 dance team. I had my two friends Ellie and Jamie help me interview Shirley and to do that we used a nice camera on a tripod as well as a microphone set to really capture the sound quality and give the video interview feels. I edited my video in Final Cut Pro and focused on making my three sound bits very strong and clean as well as the audio. I'm very happy with the turnout of my video and I want to thank Shirley for being the expert I could interview!
In class we've been practicing how to film a proper interview. It is a bit hard because there are so many aspects to recording a good interview. You have to make sure your camera is at an angle, the subject is at eye level to the interviewer, the sound is clear, the quality of the camera is decent and not blurry as well many other little things. Interviewing is super fun but just a little difficult to remember to incorporate all of the little things. I am going to be filming my interview tomorrow during class. Shirley Gelman (Laduette) will be telling me about Nationals she attended last week!
For the past two weeks we've been working on our six word story videos. This was an independent project that some people filmed at school but others, like myself, filmed at home. This was fun because you could do it about anything you wanted. I made my six word story about dance. My six word story was, "Achieving your goal never comes easily". My goal for my video was to show how I get ready to go to dance practice everyday because practice makes perfect and the only way you'll accomplish your goals are through practice and determination. I really enjoyed filming as well as editing my video for the six word story project and I hope we get to do more creative projects like this in the near future.
Today in class we started a new project about six word stories. A six word story is simply a short text sequence with six words that typically tells a meaningful story. We also learned a little bit about Ernest Hemingway and were told to research about one of Hemingway's most famous six word stories, "For sale: baby shoes, never worn". When I first read this I didn't really understand what it meant so I took a little bit of time to break it down. My first thought once I understood it was that it was about a women who had a miscarriage and bought baby shoes that her baby could never wear, so she was selling them. I also thought that maybe she might've been selling the baby shoes because maybe they were going bankrupt and money was tight around this time for many families so I thought it could've been to earn more money. After some research, I discovered from many different sites that the meaning was indeed about a mother who had a miscarriage and was selling new, never worn baby shoes. I thought this was super sad and depressing. Not only did I research Ernest Hemingway and his six word story, but I also discovered a few other six word stories that stood out to me. The links to them are as follows:

At first, I was having trouble keeping up with all the differences from iMovie, but overall I find it to be easier and way cooler. There are endless possibilities on what you can do on Final Cut. We did many cool things to our videos. We added effects to each shot as well as transitions in between each shot. We put music in the background and added text of what each shot was. It didn't take too long and I actually thought it was overall pretty simple and fun. I really enjoyed learning how to edit on this super cool editing software!
This week we did a video scavenger hunt and I actually really enjoyed walking around the school and filming all different kinds of shots. We had to get ten different shots of specific things-some were tight, medium, and wide. One of the tasks was to record a wide shot of someone shaking hands with a police officer which was cool and we also had to film some of the construction outside as well as art work and trophy cases at Ladue High School. The only main problem or difficulty I faced was when I had to record the snack machines in the commons because the reflections kept getting in the way. I just had to adjust the camera angle a bit but that was still a struggle for me that I need to work on practicing how to fix. A few things that went very well were recording art work and recording students working on computers in the library because I feel pretty good about my shots for those. I really liked spending the entire class independently getting our shots with our groups because I found it very fun, but I also learned a lot about videography. Overall this video scavenger hunt was super fun and I'm excited to work more with my shots I took on Final Cut Pro.
